October italki Language Challenge Marketas update
October italki Language Challenge Marketas update Marketa is getting her #online #languagelessons in for the October #italki #languagechallenge! Challengers, how are you doing? A photo posted by Italki (@italki) on Oct 20, 2015 at 1:16am PDT When I was asked to join the italki October 2015 Language Challenge, I was a little hesitant. Not that I did not want to participate, but I felt a little intimidated â" as an introverted person the idea of shooting a video pledge simply scared me. However, the more I thought about it, the more excited I became about the whole concept of sharing my progress and inspiring other people to take the challenge with me. How am I doing? First of all, let me tell you that on its own, 6 hours is not that much time to make huge progress, especially when I work and also have several essays to write for university back in the Czech Republic at the same time. Right now it is almost the end of week 1 of the challenge and so far I have only finished 2 sessions out of 6. I decided to stick to having sessions with only one teacher throughout the challenge as I seriously need to work on my sentence structure and I feel I would lose too much time explaining what my weak points in Chinese are before each and every session. Anna, my Chinese teacher, tailored the sessions to suit my needs. During the first half an hour we usually go through a written dialogue from a textbook, reading it out loud, explaining grammar points, new words and structures. The second half an hour is focused on speaking. I summarize the dialogue using given vocabulary, answer various questions about it and then we just have a random chat about ourselves, our plans or other current topics like Chinese holidays or food. I particularly like this part of our class because not only do I learn about the Chinese language, but Anna also explains a lot about the Chinese culture which is very helpful in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the Chinese mentality and lifestyle. Finding the right strategy Revising what I have learned during my italki sessions is a crucial part of learning. Honestly, at first I had not been doing very well. I was lucky enough to realize this at the very beginning though. From then I started adding all of my new vocabulary into Anki, a spaced repetition flashcard program that I highly recommend. Also, using new structures in sentences and rewriting them over and over again turned out to be helpful. Above all, I found that the most important aspect of the revision process is reading out loud! I cannot stress enough how immensely it helps me. As for me, speaking is essentially the hardest thing to master when it comes to learning a new language. Having adopted this strategy, I believe my progress will be more evident and I will eventually reach my goal of being able to hold a 5-minute conversation about myself with one of my Chinese colleagues. Irvine Tutor Tips Improve Your Study Skills THis Winter
Irvine Tutor Tips Improve Your Study Skills THis Winter Irvine tutoring tips: 4 ways students can improve study skills this winter Every student can improve study skills and reorganize at this point in the year. In fact, having great study skills can raise a studentâs overall GPA, decrease their frustration, and help them view school as a positive part of their lives. Students will get assignments done quicker, and theyll have an opportunity to do non-academic things that make their lives balanced at this point in their childhood. Whether students organize on their own or with the help of a private Irvine tutor, winter break is the perfect time of year to get back on track and improve study skills. 1. Organize the backpack So many students have backpacks full of assignments from previous semesters, materials they dont need, and half-finished assignments they forget to hand in. A backpack can easily get out of control and end up being a bottomless pit of disorganization. The holiday break is a great opportunity for students to empty out their backpack and start from scratch. Students can go through any previously completed assignments and archive them into folders that stay at home. If they need to look back at those assignments for a cumulative midterm or final, they will still be available, but they wonât be taking up space from day to day. Students should have one folder and one notebook for each subject to keep them separate and they can also have an âassignments to doâ and an âassignments completedâ folder. This way, students will know just where to look for an assignment that needs to be handed in. 2. Prioritize assignments Students should also start prioritizing their assignments before starting school again in January. They need to know which assignments are worth a substantial portion of their overall grade and which are worth just 1 or 2 bonus points. A student should not be spending several hours on an extra credit assignment if they have not yet started something worth 20% of their final grade. Students also need to start prioritizing assignments by the due date. Something due tomorrow should be completed before something due next month. If students dont know where to get started, they should consider working with a study skills tutor (READ: 4 Reasons Why You Need a Tutor In January). 3. Work with a private Irvine tutor Many students dont need to work on a particular concept but need help getting organized and becoming more efficient. Tutors can help students cut down the amount of time they spend on busy work and help students keep things organized and easy to remember. Each learner is different and will need a different set of guidelines in order to stay on task, thats why its great to have a one-on-one tutor give a student the individual attention they cant get anywhere else. 4. Improve concentration Its easy for students to get distracted at any age, especially if they are attempting to conquer dry material. One of the best things they can do is work on improving concentration. This will include eliminating distractions such as social media apps, unnecessary noise, and temptations to do something that seems more fun. Homework should be done in a quiet space and students should only be around classmates if they are working legitimately on a group project or as part of a study group. They should not be on social media or texting during homework time because it distracts them from their primary goal. Students will still have plenty of time to socialize once they finish their assignments, something that will happen sooner if they have the appropriate amount of concentration. Volume Formula For a Cube Tutors
Volume Formula For a Cube Tutors A cube is a 3-dimensional solid geometric figure containing 6 faces, all of which are congruent squares. Since each face of a cube is a square, hence all the sides of a cube are equal to each other. We can find the surface area and the volume of the cube according to their respective formulas. Volume of a cube is the amount of space contained inside a cube and the volume formula of the cube depends on the side length of the cube. Example 1: Calculate the volume of the cube whose side length measures 5m? Given the side length of the cube, s = 5m Volume of a cube is the amount of space contained inside the cube and it is given by the formula: Volume of a cube, V = s3 Therefore volume of the given cube, V = (5m)3 This gives: Volume, V = 125m3 Therefore the volume of a cube whose side measures 5m is 125m3 Example 2: Calculate the volume of the cube whose side length measures 11m? Given the side length of the cube, s = 11m Volume of a cube is the amount of space contained inside the cube and it is given by the formula: Volume of a cube, V = s3 Therefore volume of the given cube, V = (11m)3 This gives: Volume, V = 1331m3 Therefore the volume of a cube whose side measures 11m is 1331m3
How to Use Feedback Loops to Tell Your Employer Something is Wrong - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to Use Feedback Loops to Tell Your Employer Something is Wrong - Introvert Whisperer How to Use Feedback Loops to Tell Your Employer Something is Wrong Itâs no secret that introverts often keep to themselves and donât always feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings with people. When dealing with someone in a position of power, the overwhelm may be too much for an introvert to express their concerns and issues they may be having. As you may know, introverts process their thoughts and feelings internally, which can be exhausting at times. During times of great stress and dismay, introverts need more recovery time and space to do their thinking. Coming clean or discussing a matter of importance may be delayed because of how an introvert is interacting with the information she or he is getting. If this is the case for you, a feedback loop might be what is needed to help you express your concerns. Introverts Are Not Quiet or Shut-off While it is a common misconception that introverts are withdrawn and donât like to talk to people, it is true for some people who internalize everything around them. The sensations they have in their bodies may be too much at times to deal with the day-to-day energies that are needed to manage a job. For a great deal of introverts, the real trouble begins when they are stressed out or overthinking a situation because they do all of their thinking in their heads. Introverts rarely reach out to someone for comfort or consultation. Because of this, they allow issues to weigh heavily on them for far longer than the average person might. Such situations still require resolution and a feedback loop, or some form of electronic or anonymous way of providing information to an employer may be needed. Keep the Conversation Going Feedback loops provide safe spaces for employees to report issues, concerns, and also praise or support their superiors. Feedback loops also work the other way as well: superiors can provide information to their employees. These virtual meeting rooms provide employers and employees with the ability to discuss matters, track issues, and provide resolutions without overwhelming one another. While communication is of the utmost importance, especially in todayâs workplace, how that communication happens is less important than ensuring the information gets out and is dealt with properly. Software Keeps People Connected You may be of the opinion that the last thing an office needs is another chat room or electronic software package to separate its workers, but for people who need to collect their thoughts before they feel comfortable expressing them, and for people who need to have space to process what is received in return, they are the perfect solution. If you are reading this you are either someone who identified as an introvert or you are an employer who has people on staff that are introverts. Even if you arenât in one of these two categories, providing a safe and effective means of communication without confrontation is important for todayâs workplaces. Curiosity is Important Introverts are very curious people and they like to dig into their own thoughts and explore why things are the way they are. While using a feedback loop, you can explore your own thoughts and come to conclusions about how certain situations rest with you before providing that feedback to your employer. You may find that you are able to resolve some of the issues on your own, especially if your brain is in hyperdrive about something and you suspect you may be overreacting. Still though, providing that feedback is a worthwhile move because it draws attention to the unrest that you may be experiencing, and your employer may be able to help you with that. Use the Tools you Have Thereâs no reason to just limit feedback loops to when something needs to be reported through. There are plenty of reasons to use feedback loops to promote and support one another. Providing positive feedback and congratulatory messages are also great ways to connect with one another online and keep the conversations going while building trust and holding space for someone in the office. Introverts are often exhausted at the end of a long work day, and while extroverts may still have the energy to be around people and talk about their problems, introverts may not. Providing an online forum for discussion and interaction ensures that introverts get to participate in the conversation, resolutions, and solution-based discussions for the organization. If you are an introvert, itâs your job to make sure you are engaging with the tools and resources that are provided, so if you have a feedback loop system in your office, start using it. Do You Sing Prevent A Vocal Hemorrhage and Keep Your Voice Healthy
Do You Sing Prevent A Vocal Hemorrhage and Keep Your Voice Healthy Suzy S. Adele fans across the US learned the news this week that her upcoming tour has been canceled, due to a vocal cord hemorrhage. Whether you sing as a career or just as a hobby, this news is a shocking reminder of how important it is to take care of your voice as a singer. Although it may not seem like it at first, singing is just like a sport â" it demands warm-up routines, conditioning, and practicing healthy technique. Whether youre a teacher preparing for a gig or a student preparing for an audition, TakeLessons knows the importance of health when it comes to music. Most already know the usual pointers like avoiding smoking and drinking enough water, but the NY Daily News website also reminded us of some less-obvious pointers: 1. Dont abuse your speaking voice: Most singers have been trained how to sing for many years. They know the vocal posture, the technique, how to relax their voice and get good strength from their breath support. But as soon as they walk offstage, they have poor speaking posture because they dont think about it anymore. They are not trained to speak well; they are trained to sing well. Yet even the most professional singer only sings 1% or less of the time. Poor speaking posture will catch up to you in the end, so maintain good vocal technique even when just speaking. 2. Sing within your vocal range: Everyones instrument is built in a certain way. You have alto saxes, bass saxes and soprano saxes. The same thing goes for singers. If you are asked to sing a song that is out of your natural range you actually have to push a little harder and that can result in strain, especially if you are singing out of your range multiple times a week. Thats a real big strain on your voice because your instrument isnt built to go to that range. There are tons of other resources and tips out there for the full article, check out the NY Daily Times website. Some specialists even suggest avoiding certain things like spicy food and dairy before a performance. Teachers, what other advice do you have? Leave a comment below to join the discussion!
